# Reduce replicas on data nodes
Some indices on data nodes are configured with more replicas than the cluster needs. Each extra replica duplicates data and increases coordination work during indexing and recovery.

Reducing the number of replicas for the data node can improve performance, save on storage costs, enhance indexing throughput and ensure cluster stability. This is because replicas introduce additional resource usage, which can negatively impact performance and stability.
