# Work with APM Server
When self-managing the Elastic Stack, APM Server receives performance data from APM agents,
validates and processes it, and transforms the data into Elasticsearch documents.

  If you're using Elastic Cloud Serverless, there is no APM Server running. Instead the _managed intake service_ receives and transforms data. Read more in [Get started with traces and APM](https://www.elastic.co/elastic/docs-builder/docs/3016/solutions/observability/apm/get-started).

  For new users, Elastic recommends using the OpenTelemetry path through the [EDOT Collector](https://docs-v3-preview.elastic.dev/elastic/docs-builder/docs/3016/reference/edot-collector) or [Managed OTLP](https://docs-v3-preview.elastic.dev/elastic/docs-builder/docs/3016/reference/opentelemetry/motlp) rather than sending data directly to the APM Server.
